One week has flown by. Savannah is doing well. Praise the Lord for her progress.
Here is the good news!
- The preliminary results from the brain ultrasound are in. The ultrasound does NOT show anything abnormal. The ultrasound will be reviewed by the "brain doctor" within the next 24 hours and then we will get the official report.
- Her feedings have been increased from 3cc to 4cc every 3 hours. She continues to tolerate the feedings. This is a really good sign!
- She has gained some more weight. She weighed in last night at 1lb 14oz. She is moving closer to her birth weight of 2lbs.
She did have a minor setback. She needed a blood transfusion today. This was required because her red blood count is low. She has this problem because of the issues I had with my low platelet count. Her little body cannot reproduce the red blood cells fast enough so a transfusion was required. Today's transfusion was 12ml administered over a 3 hour period. Her granddaddy and I were present for the blood tranfusion (most of it anyways) and it seemed to be a fairly plainless process. Sidenote: 12ml is almost a teaspoon.
Today's blood was from an unknown donor. They had warned us that she may require several transfusions throughout her NICU stay. I started the paperwork so I could get blood donated from family members to be designated for her. However I did not complete the paperwork in time. FYI: her blood type is type 0 positive.
Surprise...surprise. Her head is growing at an accelerated rate. It went from 24cm to 26cm. They are going to monitor this but I'm sure it's just a genetic thing. Baby Kevin has had a few brain ultrasound for the same reason. Turns out- he just had daddy's big head. So sorry Ms. Savannah but you might be joining the ranks of the big head club. Hey we're just smarter! :)
Savannah and her neighbor are now affectionately called "two peas in a pod" by the NICU nurses. Her mom and I share similar stories. The neighbor's due date was Jan. 14th and Savannah's due date was Jan 15th. I have had the chance to meet her mom and she's really sweet. Please pray for Savannah's first girl friend. She will probably need another surgery.
Thanks again for praying for us. Please continue to pray for Savannah's progress. Pray for her eye, lung, brain and ear development. Pray that she will remain infection free. Pray that she will continue to fight strong. I am really proud of Savannah. She is tiny but she is strong. I didn't get to hold her today because of the blood tranfusion. I hope to hold her tomorrow.
Here are some pictures from today.
Baby Kevin is sporting Savannah's sunglasses. hmmm they're not quite his size.
Another shot of the sunglasses next to grandma's phone.
Savannah's pacifer next a puzzle piece.
It was hard to take good pictures due to the dim lights in the NICU today. We are not allowed to use a flash. I wouldn't want to use a flash anyways. Here she is getting the blood transfusion. That is a blood pressure cuff on her arm.

I think Robbie ended up having 4 blood tranfusions while we were there. (Terrible that I lost track.) The first one freaked me out a little, but it was pretty amazing how much more energetic he was the next day and how much better his O2 sats were.
ReplyDeleteHoping you get plenty of good snuggle time tomorrow!
Fab update! Thank you for saying how much 12 mL is! Your little girl is AMAZING
ReplyDeleteAmanda from TPP :)
Campbell had several blood transfusions, too. Each time she made some huge gain the next day (once she recovered from an infection that had put her on a vent for the 1st time, once she got off the CPAP, and once she started eating bottles like a champ).
ReplyDeleteThinking of you guys all the time!
Thanks for the info ... when you are snuggling with her tomorrow tell her Auntie CiCi say "I love you Savannah can't wait to meet you"
